About School
The Doon School (TDS), Dehradun is one of India’s finest all-boys boarding schools for students aged 12–18. Established in 1935, the school has earned a reputation for academic excellence, leadership development, and holistic education. It is perhaps the only truly “All-India” school, receiving applications from nearly every state as well as Indian families abroad.
Set on a sprawling 70-acre campus in the foothills of the Himalayas, The Doon School provides a green, pollution-free environment with diverse flora, fauna, and bird life. Students benefit from round-the-clock guidance with teachers, counsellors, and staff residing on campus, ensuring a nurturing environment for academics, sports, arts, music, drama, and career preparation. Unlike day schools, The Doon School operates as a full residential institution where students immerse themselves in academics, extracurricular activities, and personal growth.
Mission and Vision
The mission of The Doon School is to attract and nurture exceptional boys and teachers from diverse backgrounds, inspire them to be ethical citizens, train them as principled leaders, and prepare them for lifelong success through one of India’s strongest alumni networks.
The vision is to position The Doon School among the world’s most pre-eminent educational institutions for boys aged 12–18.
Origin and History
The Doon School was founded by S. R. Das, who was inspired by his education at Manchester Grammar School in England. His vision was to establish a premier Indian school that offered world-class education without students needing to go abroad. Unlike other boarding schools of its time, which were either reserved for British pupils or elite classes, The Doon School was founded as a secular institution open to all sections of Indian society.
The first Headmaster, Arthur Foot, a science master from Eton College, emphasized academics, character-building, and social service. His deputy, John Martyn from Harrow, later became the school’s second Headmaster. From its inception, The Doon School was built to produce leaders for a free and democratic India.
Today, the school houses around 500 boys aged 12–18, continuing its legacy of excellence in academics, sports, cultural activities, and leadership.
